    Overview

    Ensure accurate and timely interpretation and resulting of Cytology specimens.

    Qualifications

    Education: Bachelor’s degree in Cytotechnology or equivalent through formal 4 year program.

     

    Licensure/Certification: ASCP or NCA desirable, other national certifications considered

     

    Experience: Minimum one year full time experience as a cytotechnologist. Ability to communicate accurately and concisely; verbally and written.  Extreme attention to detail required.

    Responsibilities

    Screening both gynecologic and non-gynecologic prepared slides using both standard and computer-assisted microscopy. 

     

    Screening of specialized cytology slides using immunofluorescence.

     

    Maintain correct specimen/patient identification and ensure appropriate resulting.

     

    Interacts with LIS for patient information, correct specimen identification, and proper reporting. 

     

    Maintains accurate daily workload records.

     

    Identifies and reports issues with cytology staining and patient history and slide findings mismatches. 

     

    Produce accurate, quality results following Bethesda guidelines. 

     

    Follow written protocols precisely.

     

    Operate all related instrumentation and equipment according to procedure.  Perform required maintenance of equipment.

     

    Perform research on new methods, procedures, or projects as required. Perform special projects as directed by pathologist.

     

    Recognize and comply with all quality management requirements.

     

    Participates in continuing education and all related proficiency testing.   

     

    Process specimens, prepares slides by staining and coverslipping slides when needed.

     

    Work with other co-workers to ensure completion of all tasks.

     

    Understand and adhere to HIPAA policies, procedures and regulations to assure patient confidentiality.

     

    Maintain a safe and clean working environment at all times.

     

    Administrative duties including excellent customer service to all patients, clients and employees.

     

    Perform other work related duties as assigned.

    This position performs tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids and/or tissues. All employees performing these duties are offered the opportunity to receive the Hepatitis-B vaccination series.

    General Physical Requirements

    Regularly exposed to infection by handling potentially infectious samples.

     

    Typically Stands for extended period of times

     

    Lift up to 25 pounds.

     

    Mobility to climb stairs on a regular basis.

     

    Wearing appropriate protective gear: Lab coat, gloves, goggles, and face shield.
