Job Description

This position is responsible for the operation of the clinical microbiology testing area of our laboratory at our new facility in Omaha. It will require time working on the bench in addition to overall department leadership. As a leader, you will be helping to bring on new technologies and procedures utilizing department staff, assisting with budget development and management, as well as consistently maintaining Interpath's corporate culture and our commitment to quality. Must have at least 4 years' experience performing high complexity testing in Microbiology within a clinical laboratory setting (Molecular experience is also strongly preferred).

 

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Technical Supervision
    • Responds to inside and outside questions from the outside client service team and providers that are of a technical nature, and apply to testing within the microbiology department. 
    • Takes initiative as it relates to implementation of new tests and instrumentation.
    • Effectively communicates with team and equipment vendors to minimize downtime and continued quality operation of equipment in the microbiology department.
    • Oversees calibration, operation, troubleshooting and maintenance of division equipment.
    • Maintains practical knowledge of clinical microbiology department with ability to work on the bench as required.
  2. Team Supervision
    • Determines optimal FTEs within the division, recommending changes as necessary.
    • Monitors the technical competencies of each team member within the division and provides guidance regarding career development (e.g., technical assistants becoming certified as MLS/MT)
    • Serves as a collaborative leader who effectively balances the needs of the company and team.
    • Effectively engages in professional growth and performance management of assigned team members within the division. This includes, but is not limited to facilitating mentorships and learning and development opportunities.
    • Manages the monthly schedule for the division, approves timecards and leave requests within the division.
    • Maintains compliance with all policies, protocols and procedures.
    • Oversees and participates in team training and educational opportunities; identifies and communicates abnormal patient conditions, and reports mandated information to the public health department or other designated officials.
    • Actively participates in the recruiting, hiring and disciplinary action of the division team.
  3. Quality Assurance and Compliance
    • Oversees preparation for inspections and accreditation processes within the division.
    • Ensures annual review by all leads of applicable inspection checklists
    • Develops and tracks quality indicators for assigned division and oversees all process improvement projects.
    • Work with leads to ensure initial, 6-month and annual training and competencies are completed and documented.
    • Understand and adhere to HIPAA policies, procedures, and regulations to assure patient confidentiality.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor's Degree in a science field. Licensure/Certification: MLS/MT certification required.

 

Experience:

Proficient use of Microsoft Office products, use of multiple databases, 4 years' experience performing high complexity testing in Microbiology within a clinical laboratory setting, and demonstrated success in a leadership and/or supervisory position.

 

Skills:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, high aptitude and commitment for accuracy, detail oriented and organized, the ability to lead, motivate and coach a team for high performance. Ability to delegate tasks and functions appropriately as well as the ability and commitment to do whatever it takes to turn out results and complete projects on time and on budget.

General Physical Requirements

General Office work; prolonged sitting, occasional stooping, reaching, climbing and bending

Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.

Manual dexterity for typing, 10-key work, and telephone use.

Driving in all types of conditions, including heavily populated areas, freeway, and rural traffic, hours of darkness, and inclement weather.
